The Blitz feed cannon has been in production since 1994 and is now in its third edition, with each new model an improvement on the last. The latest model is likely to be very difficult to improve upon, with thousands of hours of working experience gained by our customers and millions of tonnes of food delivered through BLITZ feeders over the years, contributing to the gradual development of a tough reliable feed cannon.
The standard Blitz feeder has a one-piece aluminium chassis and hopper, but is available at special request in stainless steel, for marine farms where high ambient temperatures are experienced and corrosion more severe. Feeders can be supplied with a water pump powered either by a 5.5 hp Honda gasoline or a 6 hp Lombardini diesel engine, or with a hydraulically driven unit, powered from a work boat's own hydraulics. The heart of the machine is a very simple yet effective venturi, where water is forced out at high velocity through a shaped nozzle. The food flows from the 50 kg hopper, metered by a slide valve into the water jet and is shot out of the flexible barrel into the fish cage. The flexibility of the barrel enables a wide spread of food across the entire surface area of the cage by simply aiming it to where you want the food to go.
Blitz feeders are compact and light in weight, so they occupy very little space in a work boat and add less than 40kg to the payload. This also makes them easy to move around between boats or onto the shore.
Working with a Blitz feeder couldn't be easier. The hopper is low in height at just 75c/m, so filling is easy. The metering valve, the only moving part on the machine other than the engine, is smooth in operation and evenly mixes the food into the water flow. The feeding rate depends somewhat on the size of the feed pellets and how well they flow, averaging normally around 40kg/min. The rate is of course variable down to zero, by adjusting the size of the opening of the metering valve. The feeding range is between 18 and 22 metres. Approximately three-quarters of a 70m circular cage surface can be reached.
Full instructions on how to get the best out of the water pump are included with the engine manufacturer's handbook. We strongly recommend that the advice on engine oil changes, especially in the first two to three months of use, is followed. Fuel consumption is difficult to calculate, but in our experience, the pump's engine will normally run for approximately
1-1½ hours between fuel re-fills.
